Transpersonal psychology is a discipline integrating modern science and the spiritual traditions of the world. As consciousness researchers, the investigations of Drs. Beck and Colli extend to the scientific arena through co-authored articles in peer-reviewed journals. The following research integrates modern science, extraordinary experience and healing.

Nothing New Under the Sun: Implications for the Dissemination of Galactic Knowledge
Thomas Beck, Ph.D. and Janet Colli, Ph.D.
Shift in Action
, 2007, Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), http://www.shiftinaction.com/node/3618

Abstract: Diffusion theory argues that given the vast amount of time the universe has existed, extraterrestrials have had plenty of time to cross the Milky Way galaxy and establish a community of civilizations. One implication of this hypothetical, intra-galactic dispersion of civilizations deserves mention. Namely, that every known-and as yet unknown-innovation of human genesis has probably already occurred countless times within these advanced civilizations. The sheer number alone of civilizations that have hypothetically existed for eons supports this. The idea that there is nothing new under the sun may be true, after all.

“Unity Consciousness: A Quantum Bio-Mechanical Foundation”
Thomas E. Beck, Ph.D. and Janet E. Colli, Ph.D.
Journal of the International Society for the Study of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine (ISSSEEM),
2003, 14(3) pp. 267-301

A neuron from the cerebellar cortex

Abstract: Citing research in consciousness, quantum physics, biophysics and cosmology, we propose the collective amplification of quantum effects as the basis for scientifically describing Kundalini awakening, and the higher-order, emergent phenomenon of Unity consciousness. Such alterations of consciousness have their origin in quantum-scale processes, such as self-induced transparency, superradiance, superpositions, quantum tunneling, and Bose-Einstein condensation. Microtubules are considered to be key components in non-local, quantum processes critical to human consciousness. We postulate that bundles of fibers (neural cells), each containing numerous microtubule "lasers" acting in unison, collectively result in a massive surge of light energy to the brain. The sudden onset and radically altered nature of such states are consistent with a model based on the activation of a laser. The liquid crystalline nature of the human body likely provides a foundation for the non-local aspect of Unity consciousness. The unifying paradigm of the "quantum hologram" is introduced to apply quantum properties to macroscopic events.

“A Quantum Bio-Mechanical Basis for Near-Death Life Reviews”
Thomas E. Beck, Ph.D. and Janet E. Colli, Ph.D.
Journal of Near-Death Studies, Spring 2003, Vol. 21, No. 3, pp. 169-189.

Abstract: Near-death life reviews pose a challenge to current memory research in terms of the sheer amount of instantaneous and empathetic information recall. Advances in quantum physics, bio-mechanics, holographic information theory, and consciousness studies support for the first time a fully realizable quantum bio-mechanical basis for near-death life reviews. We introduce the unifying paradigm of the quantum hologram as a non-local carrier of information. We further investigate the interrelated phenomena of non-local communications, and the electromagnetic zero-point field (ZPF). Recent confirmation of the ZPF lends credibility to vast memory storage capabilities outside the physical body. Microtubules are considered to be key components in non-local, quantum processes critical to human consciousness. Discovery of the liquid crystalline nature of the human body provides further support for our model. Microtubules, DNA and the entire brain are described as communicating non-locally with virtually unlimited memory storage capacity.

“Recovery of Bulimia Nervosa through Near-Death Experience: A Case Study”
Janet E. Colli, Ph.D. and Thomas E. Beck, Ph.D.
Journal of Near-Death Studies
, Fall 2003, Vol. 22, No. 1, pp. 33-55.

Abstract: Single case studies have lost considerable prestige since Freud's historical precedence. Yet they can provide a solid framework upon which to portray a previously unknown process. A single case study can disclose the process by which a compulsively disordered psyche successfully negotiates healing. The life-threatening medical complications and suicide attempts that are sometimes concomitant with eating disorders, specifically Bulimia nervosa — sometimes lead to near-death experiences (NDEs). Various Studies will be cited as evidence for that claim. Its significance will then be explored under the auspice of a single case study. One woman's story will be presented to illustrate an attempted suicide, her near-death experience, and subsequent recovery from bulimia nervosa.

Abstract: Believers and skeptics have long pondered the identity of Our Lady of Fátima, the brilliant entity who appeared above Fátima. Was she the Virgin Mary, sharing divine secrets with believers? Was she an angel, bringing a message of peace to a world at war? Or was she an alien being, inspiring humanity to look up and contemplate the mystery of the Cosmos? Now, in Fátima Revisited, an international panel of top scholars subjects the legendary apparitions of Fátima to the scrutiny of modern scientific analysis; explores the connections between encounters with apparitions, angels, and aliens; and proposes a new paradigm for such unexplained phenomena. This third volume in the acclaimed trilogy is the result of a transdisciplinary study by the Multicultural Apparitions Research International Academic Network (Project MARIAN) at the University Fernando Pessoa in Porto, Portugal.

“What are Close Encounters?
Challenging the Materialism of Mainstream Psychology”
Manuscript submitted for publication, Journal of Transpersonal Psychology, 2008

Abstract: The 'close encounter' phenomenon affords an opportunity to highlight the process by which proponents of the mainstream scientific paradigm grapple with a phenomenon that undercuts materialism. A review of psychological research highlights the scientific unacceptability of the anomalous phenomenon — to the researchers themselves. When CEs do not “fit” their chosen conceptual framework, researchers have resorted to the value judgment that the phenomena are irreconcilable with “normal mental functioning.” The culture of psychology has thus been strongly inclined to consider such people mentally disturbed, whether reporting a UFO sighting, an 'alien abduction,' or even believing in UFOs as extraterrestrial spacecraft. But though the reviewed research reveals no solid evidence such reports result from mental illness, cultural rejection, fantasy-prone personalities or brain disorder, psychiatry has reached an unqualified scientific rejection often generated by speculation and the ideological bias of an underlying materialist framework. Skeptical researchers can thus be seen to indulge in “the politics of ontology”, a culturally selective interpretation of what constitutes reality.

“108: Sacred Sanskrit Sounds and the Molecular Basis of Life”
Unpublished manuscript

Abstract: The sacred number “108” holds special significance for both ancient Vedic tradition and modern molecular biology at the most fundamental level of existence. The relationship between “108” in Vedic tradition and “108” in molecular biology also has potential significance for those who seek to understand the spiritual knowledge of the East within the context of the scientific paradigm of the West. The elaboration of this interconnection offers an invitation for direct participation — through the use of sound vibrations. We begin by following the evolution of one author's meditation practice in order to illustrate the functioning of “108” in a spiritual practice. We then elucidate specific structures and functions in molecular biology where exactly 108 microtubules, no more and no less, orchestrate cell division within the human body. The final section provides practical methods for incorporating sacred sound into one's daily life.

“Angels and Aliens:
Encounters with both Near-Death and UFOs”

The following presentation was given at the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS) 2001 North American Conference, July 27th in Seattle, Washington.

Abstract: Social psychology research has given us comparative studies of those who have experienced either Near-Death or UFOs, such as Kenneth Ring's (1992) comparative study of Near-Death and UFO experiencers. This presentation investigates subjects who have experienced both. What do encounters with both Near-Death and UFOs reveal about human nature and the nature of reality? From the case files of a transpersonal psychotherapist come preliminary conclusions.

What are some of the changes such subjects might report as a result of their experiences?

Increases in the following categories, as compared to Kenneth Ring's (1992) study of experiencers of solely Near-Death or UFOs: Psycho-physical changes, Psychic or healing gifts, Kundalini scale, Value shifts (social responsibility, concern for planetary welfare).

How might their view of reality differ from someone who has had neither experience?
Due to “subtle realm” intrusions into daily life, experiencers have an expanded view of physical, material reality. They tend to believe in a more fluid continuum. They also more readily believe in a multitude of beings (“we are not alone”), and more actively engage in interspecies communication.

What special challenges might arise as a result of experiencing both Near-Death & UFOs?
Due to intrusions into daily life, such experiences call for a deeper level of integration, as evidenced by increased need for healing activities that extend into their livelihood.

This presentation concludes with remarks on the need for a new (“subtle energy”) paradigm in science, as expressed by Harvard psychiatrist John Mack, M.D. (1999). Recent developments in science concerning holographic, superluminal, and non-local quantum processes are relevant. For example, the zero point field is currently theorized to be a universal holographic medium, recording the experiences of all particles. DNA is theorized to be a holographic storage medium; such a theory may provide a physiological mechanism for Life Reviews.

  Quotes from Study Participants:

“We as a species are being forced to recognize a larger reality in direct conjunction with the Indigeous prophecies of the coming earth changes. It is my opinion that we are being prepared for a major transition. I am not referring to the cosmic community's presentation of themselves, but rather a much larger shift dimensionally [that] affects the entire planet.”
— Stacie

“I do believe that my NDE and ET experiences have altered my view of material and physical reality. I am not afraid of dying anymore. When I was in my NDE, it was so calm, peaceful, and serene, that I could have stayed in that state forever. No, pain, fears, nothing but serenity. Plus, in my ET experience, I do know now that they are REAL! I was not afraid, and would like them to return, like they said they would. I feel more at peace now with my self and my loved ones. I know now that there are higher beings (the ET's) and I do believe they are here to help those who believe in them.”
— Joan

“I was afforded the chance to see that reality is truly composed of multiple realities and multiple levels of consciousness or states of being. Experience is shaped to a large degree by what an individual can handle. Sometimes the awakening is abrupt and traumatic. I have experienced both the smooth kind and the bumpy rides (I find that the more open I am, the easier the transition). Synchronistic symmetry is now the way my daily experience connects me to all those other realms within.”
— Stacie

“I experienced a lot of physical trauma as a small person so apparently it was easy to take me out and bring me back.”
— Stacie

“I enjoy and appreciate this physical reality more than before and it is less fearful to me. If only I could have been born with this simple stamp of understanding, all life's problems would have not seemed so traumatic or important. The veil between realities is much thinner, if that makes sense. I understand that we are more intertwined with the one, whole total picture.... Because of the nature of this reality—in order to experience it fully—a certain amount of separation from the other is needed. However, it seems to me that the veil just keeps getting thinner. In my daily experience, I feel like I am in many different realities all at once, just more focused here. So, it is not so bizarre or strange to me when voices, shadows, odors, etc., leak through the veil from another reality. It surely makes experiencing this reality much more interesting and entertaining.”
— Connie

“In some ways, They [the Beings] do relate to my involvement with Buddhism simply because both are making me more aware and also conscious of the law of cause and effect. For example, the reality that all beings and things are interconnected. If you change one thing, it has consequences you can't even imagine... yet. We need some way of realizing this interconnection on an experiential level rather than just a theoretical level. Then we'd understand the need to limit our population and to raise our young in an entirely different way. We'd realize the need to limit our consumption of our planetary resources.”
— Duane

“My life has been forever altered in every area imaginable: spiritually, mentally, physically, and other areas which are yet to be revealed. I think it gives me an upper hand in many instances, being able to see things from a whole new level of power, or possibility that others would be able to comprehend. It's as if I've been given a rare (but not so rare) opportunity to see beyond this little life on Earth, and that somehow I'm to aid in some special growth or understanding, or spiritual revisitation by others who are here. I've always been into holistic / homeopathic remedies, wildlife protection, animal rights, wilderness protection, habitat restoration, etc. Maybe this is just a facet of life for those of us who will help the world grow intellectually?”
— Daphne

“Many other 'dimensions' must surely exist for that type of experience to have ocurred (well, transferance of energies at the very least). It's something that happened, that I got to witness. One day I hope to learn why, or for what, or what I'm to do with all that. Til then, I'll continue to question a lot and do the little that comes to me to do. Writing this to you is a little something, eh?”
— Daphne

“One of my most vivid and favorite memories is walking through a wide, lit-up hall. It was like the walls themselves were the light bulb. Next to me was a being I felt such a deep love and respect for. He was giving me instructions. I don't recall what they were. He was very tall, not the same as the one who plays doctor. Very lanky. I would say he somewhat resembles a praying mantis. When I looked up at his head, I saw only bright white light. Like it was too bright for me to see. This same being was next to me when I woke up in ICU after the accident. I saw him in my peripheral vision and sensed his energy. When I turned my head to look straight on, he was not there.”
— Connie

“Once while vacuuming, I was having a clear conversation with an ET, I'm pretty sure. I was being told that everyone goes. I argued back that that was impossible as I mentally flashed back pictures of all the clueless people. Very clearly and gently I get back, 'everyone HAS to.' I was given the feeling that I had to help 'the clueless' become clued in, so to speak. I argued and said that I didn't want the job. And this goes on and on until I realize that I am verbally telling my vacuum cleaner all about the impossible state of this planet. When I have these types of experiences, I don't feel like I am from here. I'm not one of the natives. It feels like I came here to do a job that looked easier to do from there than it does from here. It's like I can see from both the view from the ET's side and from my own perspective at the same time.”
— Connie

“[After] the first accident I was given the opportunity to ask for help when I need it from a different level of experience. It was my feeling that my [NDE-coma experience] — it felt like I was in India.... I have friends [in India] from my first accident. Nowadays, I'm going to the extraterrestrials. I'm a bit like a fool in life, too, in a good way. I'm just open to whatever's going on. Just looking for that strongest frequency or what's going to open up the life-force in me.
— Sandro

“The whole thing was about speeding up my healing process. I remember the next day when I woke up and came down for breakfast - I was almost running down the stairs! I had just learned how to walk and weaved very slowly.... I had this intensity like my whole body, every cell was just [vibrating]. It was very powerful, you know. It was too much. It was like I had this strange, friendly relationship [with the beings.] Yeah. So I spent probably half the day doing things really well. Like a different person almost. I was doing... whatever you do in the hospital in the daytime. They are 'rehab-ing' you. So I just asked [the Beings] to turn it down. They did but they didn't turn it down all the way. It was still there but they turned it down to a more comfortable place for me. I had a level of control. How strong I was!”
— Sandro

“I now have this friendly communication going on. It's not that often, but I'll [say], 'Oh, hi,' that kind of thing. And I'll say, "Can you help me out with this?" And on some level, I'm not taking myself completely seriously, so I keep it light. But it happens every once in awhile, maybe more since the accident. [JC: Can you give an example?] (pause) I feel really silly, but helping me get a new job.... I got my voice back. That's unbelievable! And my back, too, that's really strong. So something was altered. I had a lot of skeleton-structural problems from the accident before. Like, one leg was longer, the really bad one. Back stuff [was healed], and how that affects your energy levels.”
— Sandro

“My exceptional human experiences (EHEs) have repeatedly shown me that everything is in a process of changing, unfolding, and evolving and that there is an infinitely bigger picture than the one I (we) operate from in the realm of physical reality. My EHEs represent a body of knowledge, and when viewed in sequence, one can esily see why I have chosen to work as a personal growth consultant, utilizing clairvoyant, clairsentient, and clairaudient skills to... give (people) hints about their multidimensional being, and connect them to a larger life story.... Because I have the privilege of seeing our divinity, I have come to trust the Mystery.”
— Judith

“Each of (my) EHEs... have not resulted in forming who I am. Rather they have been messages, codes about who I am, and who I am to become. Once again, my responses have been paramount in the process. I hid my own light, refused to see it all around me, until I felt strong enough to be an effective vehicle for it. My EHEs kept me on track. They have cheered me on. To experience light (love, higher consciousness, nivana, God) on earth, I have had to see and touch a bit of heaven.”
— Judith
